Mindset Shifts That Changed My Energy in Midlife
If you’ve ever thought your low energy was just part of getting older, I get it. I used to believe the same thing. Midlife comes with a lot…hormones shifting, life responsibilities piling up, and the constant pressure to “do it all.” It can feel like exhaustion is just our new normal.
But here’s the truth: energy isn’t only about what you eat or how much you sleep. It’s also about how you think.
When I started making a few mindset shifts, I noticed my body, my focus, and even my mood shift in ways I didn’t expect. And the best part? These changes didn’t cost me a thing.
Today I want to share the exact mindset shifts that changed my energy and how you can start putting them into practice, too.
1. From “I have to” → “I get to”
This one was huge for me.
“I have to get groceries.”
“I have to cook dinner.”
“I have to workout.”
Every “have to” felt heavy and draining before I even started.
When I flipped those words into “I get to,” my entire perspective changed:
I get to fuel my body with good food.
I get to move because my body survived two sudden cardiac arrests and is still here to carry me through life.
I get to show up for my family because I’m alive and present.
Suddenly, everyday tasks became gratitude moments; and gratitude is energizing.
2. Protecting My Mornings
In the past, I used to roll out of bed and dive straight into emails, scrolling, or reacting to everyone else’s needs. No wonder I felt drained by 10am.
Now, my mornings are non-negotiable. Before I do anything else, I:
Drink water (before my smoothie)
Move my body a little (stretching or walking)
Take 5 minutes for quiet reflection
Protecting this time sets the tone for my entire day. Instead of reacting, I start with intention; and that gives me way more energy than rushing around ever did.
3. Listening to My Body Instead of Battling It
For years, I thought energy meant pushing harder: more workouts, more coffee (for many, though I never drank it), and more “hustle”, but that only left me burned out.
The real game-changer? Learning to listen to what my body needed. Some days, that means resting. Other days, it’s swapping an intense workout for a walk outside. It’s realizing that my body isn’t the enemy. It’s my partner.
That shift alone lifted so much mental and emotional weight, which translated into real energy.
4. Letting Go of “All or Nothing” Thinking
Raise your hand if you’ve ever thought: If I can’t do it perfectly, why do it at all?
Yep, that was me too.
That mindset sucked the life out of me. If I couldn’t do the whole workout, eat the perfect meal, or follow the perfect plan, I just wouldn’t bother.
Now? I embrace progress over perfection. A 10-minute walk still counts. A mostly healthy meal is still a win. Every small shift adds up, and that grace has freed up so much mental energy.
5. Reframing Stress
Stress used to feel like my default. Anytime something went wrong, my thoughts spiraled: This is too much. I can’t handle it. I’m exhausted.
But one reframe changed everything:
Instead of “This is happening to me,” I remind myself “This is happening for me.”
That doesn’t mean stress magically disappears, but it does mean I face it with curiosity instead of defeat. And when your mindset is lighter, your body follows.
Energy isn’t just about food, sleep, or exercise. It’s also about what happens between your ears. These five mindset shifts taught me that the way I think can either drain me or fuel me.
And here’s the best part: you don’t need to overhaul your life to start. Pick one shift today, try it, and see how your energy feels this week.
